Many of us know what it’s like to feel we’re “just getting by.” When challenges are overwhelming, it can seem like survival mode is the only way forward. This mindset serves us well in times of crisis; it keeps us moving, keeps us safe. But there comes a time when we need to shift—to break out of survival and step into growth. Thriving doesn’t just happen; it’s a conscious choice to reach for something more.
My own journey has been filled with these moments of survival. There were times when just making it through the day felt like an accomplishment. But I also discovered that thriving was within reach, even if I couldn’t see it at first. The journey from surviving to thriving starts with a small shift in mindset. Today, I’m sharing how you can take this first step, too.
Recognizing Survival Mode:
Before we can move forward, we need to recognize where we are. Survival mode often looks like getting through the day by going through the motions. It’s defensive, reactive, and sometimes necessary—but it’s not a long-term way to live. If you’re in survival mode, you might notice a scarcity mindset, low energy, and limited joy.
It’s okay to acknowledge that you’re in this place. In fact, it’s a vital part of the journey. Recognizing survival mode as a temporary state, rather than an identity, is the first step toward a growth mindset.
Moving into Growth Mode:
Once we recognize survival mode, we can start to look beyond it. Thriving isn’t about never facing challenges; it’s about choosing growth, joy, and opportunity even when life gets tough. Moving into growth mode requires a shift in self-talk and perspective—a willingness to believe that more is possible.
In my talks with companies, I often point out the importance of aiming for resilience and confidence. This is because thriving isn’t a passive experience; it requires aiming to develop an iron will—a mindset that welcomes growth and the courage to seek more than just getting by. This mental shift is the foundation for lasting change.
Mindset Exercise: Journaling for Growth
One effective way to begin the journey to a thriving mindset is through journaling. Here’s a simple exercise to help you shift from surviving to thriving:
- Prompt #1: What are three things you’re grateful for today, even if it’s been a hard day? Gratitude is powerful—it shifts our focus from scarcity to abundance.
- Prompt #2: Write down one area where you want to grow, even if you’re facing setbacks. This is an invitation to lean into your potential and believe in your own growth.
These prompts are small steps, but each one helps shift the mind from a state of defensiveness to one of openness and growth.
In Iron Will, I share how surviving certain experiences—such as leaving an abusive marriage—required me to make hard, conscious choices. I remember the moment when I knew I had to leave; I was in survival mode, doing what I could to get by. But I also knew that staying would prevent me and my children from ever truly thriving. That choice marked the beginning of my journey toward a life that wasn’t just about survival but was instead about the freedom and confidence that come with thriving.
In that moment, I shifted from survival to growth, not just for myself, but for my children. Thriving, I learned, requires stepping outside of comfort zones and choosing courage.
Thriving isn’t a destination; it’s a mindset and a journey. If you’re ready to make that shift, start with small steps. Practice gratitude, lean into growth, and recognize that while survival mode has its place, it’s only one part of the story. Remember, an iron will isn’t about being unbreakable—it’s about building resilience and finding strength in the pursuit of growth.
